After Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang announced its earnings back on October 21, It was also announced that yahoo intended to layoff approximately 10% of the company or about 1500 jobs.  All things Digital reports the layoffs could reach 2000 by this Wednesday.

“Things have changed since these layoffs were announced,” said one source close to the situation. “But those additional cuts might not come Wednesday, but through attrition and a hiring freeze first.”

Yang, who agreed to step down from the helm at yahoo last month, has yet to leave.  It may be the perfect time for yahoo to announce his replacement and take the focus off this continual stream of bad news….

Time for the Microsoft acquisition rumor mill to start again…..  After all, it’s just business…

There are certainly times I am on the road, stuck in an airport, or just stranded somewhere, when I could just kick myself for not converting my favorite shows or downloading them from itunes to keep me occupied/entertained on my iphone. With the sheer amount of quality video content out there on the internet, wouldn’t it be nice if someone could stream it directly to my iphone?

Well, joost has just launched an iphone version of its online site, beating Hulu to the mobile phone/iphone punch. Joost does not appear to have the broad content appeal that hulu.com has, however it does offer more than 46,000 videos — including 18,000 music videos — as well as 400 TV series and 1,200 movies and short films.

“Offering Joost on the iPhone and iPod Touch is an important step for Joost as we endeavor to offer users premium entertainment where they want it and when they want it,” Joost CEO Mike Volpi said in a statement.

My initial take at the new joost app was impressive.  The quality of the stream was very good, and the interface was solid for a v1.0 version of any product.  I am sure joost will improve apon the user experience in the future, however, the bar has now been set, and Joost is the king of video streaming on the iphone!

I just recieved and email from pownce.com stating they were shutting down the service effective December 15, 2008.

“We are sad to announce that Pownce is shutting down on December 15,
2008. As of today, Pownce will no longer be accepting new users or new
pro accounts.

To help with your transition, we have built an export tool so you can
save your content. You can find the export tool at Settings > Export.
Please export your content by December 15, 2008, as the site will not
be accessible after this date.

Please visit our new home to find out more:
http://www.sixapart.com/pownce

Our thanks go out to everyone who contributed to the Pownce community,

The Pownce Crew”

Six Apart has apparently acquired microblogging/file sharing system;Pownce and promptly shut the service down.  Kevin Rose, founder of pownce, released the service publicly in January.  It appears that Six Apart acquired pownce for its staff.

An export service has been set up to transfer all Pownce posts into typepad, wordpress or vox.  No details of the transaction between Six Apart and Pownce were available.
